Key takeaways: Search suppression means Amazon has hidden the listing from search because a required element is missing or breaks a rule, most often the main image, title length, or a missing attribute. Find the reason under Manage All Inventory with the Suppressed filter or in Fix Your Products, correct the named field, and the listing usually returns within hours. Pause ads while it is down.

Suppressed, inactive or blocked: know which one you have

Three different states get called "suppressed", and they have different owners inside Amazon.

  • Search suppressed. The detail page still loads by URL, but the ASIN is hidden from search and browse. Cause: listing quality, such as a missing image or an over-length title. Fixed by editing the listing.
  • Inactive. The offer is not for sale: out of stock, pricing error, or you closed the listing. Fixed in inventory or pricing.
  • Blocked or removed. Amazon has taken the listing down for a policy reason: restricted product, IP complaint, safety, or a listing-policy violation. Shows in Account Health. Fixed by an appeal or by supplying documents.

This article deals with the first. If your problem shows under Account Health rather than under inventory, it is a policy case, and the process in B5 · How we fix catalog and technical problems covers the appeal route.

Where to find the reason

Open Manage All Inventory and use the status filter for Suppressed, or open Fix Your Products (some accounts still show it as the Listing Quality Dashboard). Each suppressed ASIN lists the attribute Amazon considers missing or invalid. Read that message literally. Amazon tells you the field; it does not tell you the fix.

Also check the listing's Fix Your Products entry for warnings that have not yet caused suppression. Those are the next suppressions in waiting, and clearing them is cheaper than reacting.

The common causes and their fixes

Reason Amazon shows What is usually wrong Fix
Missing main image No image in the MAIN slot, or the image was rejected Upload a main image on pure white, product filling about 85% of the frame, at least 1,000 px on the longest side
Main image does not meet requirements Off-white or gray background, text or logo overlay, props, product too small in frame Reshoot or edit to a pure white background; remove overlays
Title too long or missing Over the category limit, often 200 characters, or blank after a catalog update Shorten to the limit; check the category style guide for lower limits
Missing bullet points or description Fields blank or wiped by a contribution conflict Re-enter the copy and confirm it saved
Missing item type or browse node Product not assigned to a category, often after a flat-file upload Set the item type keyword and category through the edit page or a category request
Missing required attribute Color, size, material, or a category-specific field left blank Fill the attribute; a blank required attribute alone can suppress
Prohibited words in the title or bullets Promotional phrases, competitor brands, restricted claims Remove the phrase and resubmit
Pricing error Price outside Amazon's high or low thresholds, or sale price above list price Correct the price fields; clear the sale price if it conflicts

Most of these take minutes to fix. The time is usually lost finding the reason and then waiting for the edit to be accepted, which normally happens within a few hours and sometimes up to 24.

The fix sequence

Read this flowchart as text
  1. Alert: ASIN suppressed or impressions drop to zero
  2. Where does it show?
  3. Policy case: appeal via Account Health, supply documents
  4. Read the named attribute in Fix Your Products
  5. Pause campaigns targeting the ASIN
  6. Correct the field, save, confirm the edit was accepted
  7. Listing live in search within 24 hours?
  8. Resume ads, log the cause
  9. Open a case with the ASIN, field and screenshot

Why ads matter while the listing is down

A search-suppressed listing can still receive ad traffic in some cases, because the detail page exists. That traffic lands on a page with no organic support and often with a missing image, so conversion collapses while spend continues. Pause the campaigns that target the ASIN as soon as suppression is confirmed, and set a calendar reminder to resume them. Forgetting to resume is the second most common way a suppression costs sales.

Why it keeps happening

Repeat suppressions usually trace to one of three habits:

  1. Flat-file uploads that overwrite fields. A partial update template with blank cells can wipe attributes. Use the partial-update mode deliberately and never upload blanks for fields you want to keep.
  2. Contribution conflicts. When another seller or Amazon's own catalog data contributes to a shared ASIN, their value can replace yours. Brand Registry gives brand owners priority over most attributes, which is one of the practical reasons to enroll.
  3. Category rule changes. Amazon adds required attributes over time. A listing that was fine last year can be suppressed this year for a field that did not exist then. The Fix Your Products warnings are your early notice.

We log the root cause of every suppression against the ASIN so the same one does not recur, and we run a weekly check of the suppressed filter across the whole catalog rather than waiting for a sales drop to reveal it. QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How long does a suppressed listing take to come back?

Once the attribute is corrected and the edit is accepted, the listing normally reappears in search within a few hours, and almost always within 24. If it is still hidden after a day, the edit may have been rejected silently; check the field saved and open a case.

Does suppression hurt my organic rank?

While suppressed, the ASIN earns no sales from search, and sales velocity is a ranking input, so rank softens the longer it lasts. A suppression fixed within a day rarely leaves a mark. One that lasts weeks can take a similar period to recover from.

Can a variation child be suppressed while the parent is fine?

Yes, and it is common. Each child needs its own compliant main image, title and attributes. A suppressed child disappears from the variation selector for search visitors, so check the suppressed filter at child level, not just for the parent.

Why was my listing suppressed when nothing changed?

Something did change, but not necessarily by you. Amazon may have updated a category's required attributes, another contributor may have altered a shared field, or an image may have been re-evaluated against current requirements. The Fix Your Products message names the field; the listing history shows who changed it.
