Key takeaways: The Buy Box is awarded to one offer per ASIN based mostly on total price including shipping, fulfillment speed and reliability, and the seller's account health metrics. If you are the only seller you still have to qualify: a price Amazon considers too high against its reference can remove the Buy Box entirely, and Sponsored Products ads stop serving when you lose it. Keep landed price competitive, use FBA or meet its delivery standard, and hold defect rates inside Amazon's targets.

What the Buy Box is now

Amazon renamed the Buy Box the Featured Offer, but sellers still call it the Buy Box, so this article does. It is the offer attached to the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons on the detail page. Other sellers' offers sit behind the "Other sellers on Amazon" link, where few shoppers go. On mobile the difference is starker: the Featured Offer is effectively the only offer.

Two facts follow. First, if several sellers share an ASIN, whoever holds the Buy Box takes the large majority of sales. Second, Sponsored Products ads only serve for an ASIN when your offer is the Featured Offer, so losing it also switches off your advertising.

What decides it

Amazon does not publish the formula, but its own seller documentation names the inputs, and they behave consistently:

Factor What Amazon looks at Your lever
Landed price Item price plus shipping, compared with other offers and with Amazon's reference prices Reprice on total cost to the buyer, not item price alone
Fulfillment FBA and Seller Fulfilled Prime offers score well on speed and reliability; merchant-fulfilled offers must match the delivery promise Use FBA, or set accurate fast handling and shipping templates
Delivery speed Promised delivery date to the shopper's location Regional stock, fast shipping options
Seller performance Order defect rate, late shipment rate, cancellation rate, valid tracking rate, customer feedback Keep ODR under 1%, late shipment under 4%, pre-fulfillment cancellation under 2.5%
Availability In stock, with enough depth to keep fulfilling Restock before you run out; stock-outs hand the Buy Box away
Account standing Professional selling plan, account in good health, time selling on Amazon Resolve Account Health issues quickly

Price carries the most weight, but it is not a simple lowest-price-wins. An FBA offer priced slightly above a merchant-fulfilled one often wins because the delivery promise is better. A seller with a poor defect rate can be undercut by a healthier account at the same price. And Amazon may rotate the Buy Box between close offers rather than giving one seller all of it.

When the Buy Box disappears for everyone

Sometimes no offer wins. The page shows "See All Buying Options" instead of Add to Cart, and every seller on the ASIN loses most of the sales. This is Buy Box suppression, and it is usually a pricing signal: Amazon has judged the offers too expensive against a reference price, which can include the price the same product sells for elsewhere online, recent prices on Amazon, or its own pricing rules. Other causes include an offer with a shipping cost that pushes the total out of line, or a listing that is missing required data.

The fix is to bring the total price back inside what Amazon considers reasonable, then wait for the re-evaluation, which generally happens within hours. Check the Pricing Health page in Seller Central, which flags offers Amazon has judged uncompetitive and often states the reference it is comparing against.

Keeping it when you are the only seller

Brand owners who control distribution are usually the only offer on their ASINs, and they still lose the Buy Box in three ways:

  1. Pricing Health flags. Raising your Amazon price well above your own website or a big-box retailer's price is the most common cause. If you run a promotion elsewhere, mirror it or expect suppression.
  2. Stock-outs. No inventory, no Featured Offer. The related damage to rank is covered in Amazon Stock-Out: The Damage It Does and How to Recover.
  3. Account Health. A late-shipment spike on a merchant-fulfilled SKU can pull the Buy Box across your catalog until metrics recover.

Competing when you share the ASIN

If other sellers legitimately sell your product, the Buy Box becomes a daily contest. A few practical rules:

  • Reprice on landed price and let the repricer floor sit at your minimum margin, not at the competitor's price. Chasing the lowest price to hold the Buy Box at a loss is worse than sharing it.
  • Prefer FBA on shared ASINs. The fulfillment advantage lets you win at a slightly higher price.
  • Watch Buy Box percentage in Business Reports by ASIN, not just sales. A falling share with flat traffic is the early warning.
  • If the other seller is not authorized or is selling counterfeit stock, treat it as a brand protection problem rather than a pricing one. The route for that is in Amazon Hijackers: How to Remove Unauthorized Sellers.

Buy Box ownership is also a check in our pricing process, because a price test that trips a Pricing Health flag ends before it produces data.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Does the lowest price always win the Buy Box?

No. Landed price is the heaviest factor, but fulfillment method, delivery speed and account metrics adjust it. An FBA offer or a seller with cleaner metrics can win at a slightly higher price, and Amazon sometimes rotates the Featured Offer between close competitors.

Why do my Sponsored Products ads show zero impressions on one ASIN?

Check whether your offer is the Featured Offer. Sponsored Products only serve for the seller who holds it. If another seller has taken the Buy Box, or it is suppressed for the whole page, your ads pause automatically.

Can I win the Buy Box as a merchant-fulfilled seller?

Yes, if your delivery promise, price and metrics compete with FBA offers on the same ASIN. Seller Fulfilled Prime narrows the gap further. On ASINs where you are the only seller, fulfillment method matters less than staying in stock and inside Pricing Health limits.

How quickly does the Buy Box return after I fix the price?

Amazon re-evaluates offers frequently, and the Featured Offer usually reappears within a few hours of a price falling back inside the reference range. If it has not returned within a day and Pricing Health shows no flag, look at stock and account metrics next.
