Prime Day is Amazon's annual shopping event for Prime members, typically held over several days in July, with a second event, Prime Big Deal Days, in October. Amazon promotes site-wide deals, traffic rises across most categories, and sellers submit Lightning Deals, Best Deals, coupons and Prime Exclusive Discounts to be featured. It is the biggest single sales window outside Q4 for many brands, and for some categories it is the biggest of the year.

Why it matters

Prime Day compresses a month of demand into a few days, which changes how every lever behaves. Cost per click rises because every advertiser raises bids; daily budgets that last all day in June run out by mid-morning; conversion rates climb because shoppers arrive intending to buy; and stock that looked comfortable is gone by the second afternoon. A brand that has planned for those shifts takes share; one that has not either runs out of budget or runs out of stock while paying event prices for clicks.

The event also has a long tail. Sales lift in the days before as shoppers browse, and rank gained during the event carries into the weeks after if stock holds.

What moves it

  • FBA inbound deadlines. Amazon publishes a cutoff for inventory to arrive for the event; missing it means selling from thin stock.
  • Deal submission windows, which close weeks before, with event-level fees.
  • Budget and bid rules, set in advance so campaigns stay live all day without a person watching the console.
  • Listing readiness. Images, A+ Content and reviews should be in place a month out, because Prime Day traffic lands on whatever page exists.
  • Post-event pull-back, so bids and budgets return to normal before the lull.

How we use it

Our event plan starts about four weeks before: stock checked against a forecast, deals and coupons submitted, listings frozen from further edits, bid and budget rules staged with alerts, and a day-by-day plan for the event itself. Afterward we taper bids over several days rather than at once and read the event on profit, not just revenue, in the monthly report.
