Key takeaways: Each bullet answers one objection, opens with the benefit in a few capitalized words, then proves it with a specific. Order bullets by the questions buyers ask most, not by what you are proudest of. Keep them short enough to read on a phone, and drop anything Amazon's bullet policy prohibits: promotional claims, guarantee language, special characters and emojis.

What a bullet is for

By the time a shopper reads your bullets they have already clicked. The title and main image did their work. Bullets exist to remove the reasons not to buy: Will it fit? Is it the right material? What is in the box? How do I clean it? A bullet that says "PREMIUM QUALITY, built to last with care and passion" removes nothing. A bullet that says "FITS 12 TO 16 INCH LAPTOPS, padded sleeve measures 15.7 x 11 inches inside" removes the biggest one.

The structure we use for every bullet

  1. Lead phrase, capitalized, three to six words. It is the headline for scanners. State the benefit or the answer, not the feature name.
  2. Proof. One sentence with the number, material, dimension or mechanism that makes the lead phrase true.
  3. Consequence, optional. What that means in use, in a few words.

Example: "STAYS COLD FOR 24 HOURS, double-wall vacuum insulation keeps ice solid through a full workday, so the last sip is as cold as the first."

That is under 150 characters, contains a specific claim you can substantiate, and reads in one breath. Most of our bullets land between 120 and 200 characters. Category fields accept far more, but the mobile app collapses bullets behind a tap once they run long, and buyers rarely tap.

Ordering bullets by objection

Use three sources to find which objection comes first:

  • Customer questions and reviews on your own and competing ASINs. Sort by the question that repeats.
  • Search Query Performance. Phrases buyers add after the product type, such as "for small dogs" or "without drilling", are objections in disguise.
  • Return reasons in the Returns report. "Too small" at the top of that report means a size bullet at the top of the listing.

The resulting order is usually: fit or compatibility, then the core performance claim, then material or build, then what is included, then care or setup. Brand story does not get a bullet. It goes in A+ Content.

Read this flowchart as text
  1. Collect objections: reviews, Q and A, SQP, returns
  2. Rank by frequency
  3. Write one bullet per top-5 objection
  4. Each under about 200 chars, lead phrase first?
  5. Cut adjectives, keep the number
  6. Any prohibited content?
  7. Remove guarantee, promo, symbols, emojis
  8. Upload and read CVR after 3 to 4 weeks

What Amazon's bullet policy prohibits

Amazon tightened its bullet point requirements in 2024 and now corrects or suppresses listings that ignore them. The main prohibitions:

Not allowed Why it matters
Special characters and emojis (✓ ★ ™ used decoratively, and similar) Triggers automated correction; hurts readability for screen readers and AI assistants
Promotional phrases such as "free shipping", "best seller", "limited time" Classed as promotional content, prohibited in bullets
Guarantee, warranty and refund statements Amazon asks that these live in the warranty field or the description, not bullets
Company contact details, URLs, "search for..." instructions Off-Amazon steering and prohibited content
Subjective claims you cannot substantiate, such as "best", "number one", "eco-friendly" without certification Unsubstantiated claims are a listing-policy risk, especially health and environmental claims
Bullets ending in punctuation, or written as full paragraphs Style guide non-compliance and mobile truncation

If you are unsure whether a claim is allowed, the test is simple: could you prove it with a document if Amazon asked? If not, cut it.

Before and after

Before: "★ HIGH QUALITY MATERIALS ★ Our amazing yoga mat is made with the best materials for the best experience. 100% satisfaction guaranteed or your money back! Perfect gift for yoga lovers, gym goers, and anyone who wants to be healthy!!"

After: "GRIPS ON SWEATY HANDS, the textured natural rubber top layer holds in hot yoga where PVC mats slide."

The first version has three policy problems (symbols, a guarantee statement, exclamation marks), no specific, and answers no question. The second has one specific, one comparison to a common alternative material, and a consequence the buyer can picture. Four more bullets like it, covering thickness, dimensions, weight and cleaning, finish the job.

Rufus and other assistants draw on bullets to answer buyer questions, and they favor plain statements of fact over slogans. Writing a bullet as a direct answer, "FITS UNDER STANDARD DESKS, 27 inches tall", serves both the human scanner and the assistant. The full set of what those systems read is in Amazon Rufus Listing Checklist: 15 Things the AI Assistant Reads.

The copy process that produces bullets, including the policy and character checks before anything is uploaded, is described here.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How many bullet points does Amazon allow?

Most sellers can enter five bullets. Some categories and vendor accounts show more, but five is the safe planning number, and on mobile only the first few are visible before a tap, so order matters more than count.

Should bullets repeat keywords from the title?

Not deliberately. Bullets do index, so a secondary phrase that did not fit the title can go in a bullet, but only where it reads naturally. Repeating the primary phrase in every bullet adds nothing to indexing and reads like stuffing.

Do capital letters in the lead phrase break Amazon's rules?

A short capitalized lead phrase is common practice and generally passes. Writing entire bullets in capitals does not follow the style guides and is harder to read. Keep capitals to the first few words.

How do I know if new bullets improved conversion?

Compare unit session percentage for the ASIN over three to four weeks before and after, holding price and ads steady. For high-traffic ASINs, run the change through Manage Your Experiments instead, which tests bullets directly.
