Key takeaways: Amazon DSP is worth it when three things are true: your Sponsored Ads are already efficient and near their ceiling, you have audiences large enough to retarget and reach, and your budget clears the DSP minimum with enough left to test and learn. Below that line, Sponsored Display gives you most of the retargeting benefit through the self-service console with no minimum. DSP is a scaling tool, not a fix.

Amazon DSP is worth it when the self-service ad types have been optimized and the constraint on growth is reach, not efficiency. DSP buys display, video and audio inventory programmatically, on and off Amazon, using Amazon's shopping data for targeting. It reaches shoppers who are not searching, retargets those who visited but did not buy, and reports through a different attribution model. It also comes with a meaningful monthly minimum and, for most sellers, a managed or agency relationship. The question is not whether DSP works; it is whether your account is at the stage where it is the right next dollar.

What DSP does that Sponsored Ads cannot

Sponsored Products, Brands and Display live inside the Amazon shopping experience and, with Sponsored Display's off-Amazon placements, a little beyond it. DSP extends to Amazon-owned properties such as Prime Video, Twitch, Fire TV and IMDb, and to third-party sites and apps through Amazon's exchange. It offers finer audience controls, frequency caps, custom creative and, for advanced users, access to Amazon Marketing Cloud for measurement.

For a seller whose main use is retargeting detail-page visitors, Sponsored Display covers most of the ground. DSP earns its minimum when you need the inventory, the frequency control or the audience depth that the console cannot provide.

The three tests

Sponsored Ads are efficient and near their ceiling. Blended ACoS is inside its band, the search term routine is running, discovery is capped, and raising bids on proven terms no longer produces proportionate sales because impression share is already high. If any of those is not true, the next dollar belongs in Sponsored Ads, where it is cheaper and easier to measure.

The audiences are large enough. Retargeting works on the number of people who viewed your pages and did not buy. A brand with a few hundred detail page views a week has a retargeting pool too small for DSP to serve efficiently; frequency runs high and the audience is exhausted. A brand with tens of thousands of monthly views has a pool worth paying to reach.

The budget clears the minimum with room to test. DSP minimums, whether Amazon's own for managed service or an agency's, are real. A budget that only just meets the minimum leaves nothing to test audiences and creative, and the first months of DSP are testing. If meeting the minimum means starving Sponsored Products, the account is not ready.

The decision

Read this flowchart as text
  1. Considering DSP
  2. Sponsored Ads ACoS in band and impression share high on proven terms?
  3. Optimize Sponsored Ads first. Cheaper growth is still available
  4. Monthly detail page views large enough to retarget?
  5. Sponsored Display retargeting. Grow the audience first
  6. Budget clears minimum with a test allowance, without cutting SP?
  7. Goal: retarget, or reach new audiences?
  8. DSP remarketing: views, cart, purchasers for repeat
  9. DSP in-market and lifestyle, streaming TV. Measure via AMC

Retargeting is the lower-risk starting point because the audience has already shown interest and the path to a sale is short. Prospecting to new audiences is where DSP's reach matters most and where measurement is hardest; it belongs after retargeting has proven the creative and the landing pages.

What DSP should be measured on

Not ACoS, or not only. DSP reports return on ad spend using its own attribution, which includes view-through conversions, and those figures look generous next to click-based Sponsored Products numbers. Read them alongside total account metrics: total sales, total advertising cost as a share of sales, branded search volume, new-to-brand share and repeat purchase rate. If DSP is working, those move. If DSP's own ROAS looks excellent and none of the account-level numbers move, the attribution is taking credit for sales that would have happened.

Amazon Marketing Cloud is how the more careful measurement is done, and it is covered in Amazon Marketing Cloud (AMC) Audiences Explained.

Where DSP sits in a budget plan

DSP is part of the full-funnel stage of an account, the stage described in E3 · What changes with your monthly budget as what changes when monthly budgets reach the level where every self-service format is already funded. Before that stage, the same money in Sponsored Products and Sponsored Display almost always returns more. At and beyond it, DSP is how reach grows once search has been saturated. Scaling into DSP follows the same rule as scaling anything else: growth only where efficiency holds and stock allows, which is E8 · Adjusting bids by time of day.

Common ways DSP disappoints

Starting DSP to fix a Sponsored Products problem. DSP adds reach; it does not repair a listing that does not convert or a campaign structure that wastes spend. Running DSP with generic creative that does not show the product clearly. Measuring on DSP's own ROAS alone. And committing to a long minimum term before a shorter test has shown that the audiences and creative work for this brand.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum spend for Amazon DSP?

Amazon sets a monthly minimum for its managed service, and agencies set their own for access through their seats. The figures change and vary by market, so check the current requirement directly. Whatever the number, your budget should clear it with room to test rather than just reach it.

Is Amazon DSP better than Sponsored Display?

Different, not better. Sponsored Display covers retargeting and some audience reach with no minimum through the console. DSP adds streaming TV, third-party inventory, frequency control, deeper audiences and AMC measurement, at a minimum commitment. Most sellers should exhaust Sponsored Display before adding DSP.

Can a small brand use Amazon DSP?

Technically, if it can meet the minimum. Practically, a small brand's retargeting pool is usually too small to serve efficiently, and the same money in Sponsored Products and Sponsored Display returns more. DSP is a scaling tool for brands whose search advertising is already efficient.

How long before DSP shows results?

Retargeting campaigns produce attributable conversions within weeks. Prospecting and awareness campaigns show in branded search and new-to-brand share over one to three months. Judge the first quarter as a test, with the audiences and creative that worked kept and the rest cut.
