Key takeaways: Every compliant review tactic on Amazon does one of two things: asks more buyers, neutrally, or gives more buyers a reason to be happy. Use the Request a Review button on every order, enroll new ASINs in Vine, keep package inserts neutral, and fix the product problems that reviews name. Anything that pays for, filters or steers reviews breaks Amazon's policy and puts the account at risk.
The rules first
Amazon's community guidelines and seller policies prohibit:
- Offering anything of value, including refunds, discounts, gift cards or free products, in exchange for a review or for changing one.
- Asking for a positive review, or asking only buyers who had a good experience (review gating).
- Asking family, friends, employees or business partners to review.
- Reviewing competitors negatively, or asking anyone else to.
- Using third-party services that sell or trade reviews.
- Sending buyers to an off-Amazon page whose purpose is to influence the review.
- Diverting negative feedback away from Amazon while directing positive feedback to it.
Enforcement ranges from review removal to listing suppression and account deactivation. A "review strategy" that touches any of these is a risk strategy. What follows is what remains, and it is enough.
Ask everyone, neutrally, every time
The Request a Review button. On each order's detail page in Seller Central, between 4 and 30 days after delivery, the button sends Amazon's own templated message asking for a product review and seller feedback. It cannot be edited, it goes in the buyer's language, and it counts as your one review request for that order. Because it is Amazon's message, it carries no compliance risk. Automate it through an approved tool or send it manually, but send it for every order.
Buyer-Seller Messaging. If you write your own message instead, it must be about the order, may include one neutral request for a review, must not include incentives, and must not be sent if you have already used the button. Amazon limits proactive messages to what is needed to complete an order, so most sellers are better served by the button.
Package inserts. Allowed if neutral. A card that says "We would appreciate your honest review" with no incentive, no conditional language and no direction to contact you instead of reviewing passes. A card offering a gift for a review, or asking buyers to "contact us first if anything is wrong" before reviewing, does not.
Vine for new and low-review ASINs
Amazon Vine is the one program where Amazon itself provides units to selected reviewers in exchange for reviews, and it is compliant because Amazon runs it. Requirements: Brand Registry, a listing with fewer than 30 reviews, an FBA offer in stock, and an enrollment fee that depends on how many units you enroll. Vine reviews carry a badge and are written by reviewers who may be critical, so the product needs to be ready.
We enroll every launch ASIN that qualifies, in the first week it is in stock, because the first reviews decide whether early ad clicks convert. Vine is covered as a launch step in Amazon Product Launch Playbook: The First 90 Days.
Give buyers a reason to be happy
Review volume follows order volume, but rating follows product experience. The fastest lever on rating is almost never a request tactic; it is removing the cause of the three-star reviews.
Read this flowchart as text
- Rating below target or negative review cluster
- Export reviews and returns, tag each by cause
- Largest cause?
- Fix images, bullets, size chart; add the missing fact
- Route to supplier; pause ads on the affected SKU
- Change packaging or FBA prep
- Reprice or add value, not a discount for reviews
- Request a Review on every order, Vine on eligible ASINs
- Reviews per 100 orders and rating tracked weekly
The most common cluster we find is the expectation gap: the product is fine, but the listing implied something it is not. "Smaller than expected" is a listing problem with a dimensions image as the fix. Reviews that name a defect go to the supplier, and we pause advertising on that SKU until the fix is in stock, because paying for traffic to a product that earns one-star reviews compounds the damage.
Responding to reviews
Brand-registered sellers can contact a buyer who left a critical review through the Customer Reviews tool in Brands, with two templated options: offer a full refund or ask for more information about the problem. You cannot ask them to change or remove the review, and the message is Amazon's, not yours. Use it: some buyers update reviews on their own after a problem is resolved, and even when they do not, the information is worth having.
Report reviews that break Amazon's guidelines (off-topic, competitor-planted, containing personal information) through the report link. Do not report reviews because they are negative; Amazon checks against its guidelines, not your preference.
The metrics that tell you it is working
Track reviews per 100 orders, the rolling 90-day rating on new reviews, and the share of reviews by star. Review conversion for most categories sits in the low single digits per hundred orders; the button roughly lifts that, Vine front-loads it, and product fixes move the rating. A rating at or above 4.3 with a steady stream of new reviews is the working target in most of our accounts. The full compliant process, and the fix-it playbook for a rating drop, are below.
Frequently asked questions
Is it allowed to ask for a review in the package?
Yes, if the request is neutral. No incentive, no request for a positive review, no condition, and no instruction to contact you instead of reviewing. A simple honest-review request with no strings passes Amazon's guidelines.
How many times can I ask one buyer for a review?
Once per order. The Request a Review button and a Buyer-Seller message count as the same request, so use one or the other. Repeated requests are a messaging-policy violation.
Can I offer a refund to a buyer who left a bad review?
Only through Amazon's Customer Reviews contact tool, which offers a refund as a courtesy without any condition attached to the review. Offering a refund yourself in exchange for changing or removing a review is prohibited.
Does Vine require an FBA offer?
Yes. Vine units are shipped from Amazon's fulfillment centers to Vine Voices, so the ASIN needs an in-stock FBA offer, Brand Registry and fewer than 30 reviews at enrollment.
